The facts of difference between east and west are comparativly scaring.
After the so-called „Treuhand“, consistent of a majority of West Germans, managed all East German property (which was not organized privately like in the west but belonged almost completely to the state), it was sold to 85% to West Germans and to 10% to International purchasers. As one might think, the figures would decline and property would belong now to a larger scale to East Germans. But that is not true. Property in East Germany belongs at present to 98-99% not East Germans. They are dependents of the West.
Also during the first 5 years of the reunion the Western part dismissed 81% of East German workers and executive leaders in the branch of industry, 75% of agricultural workers and leaders, 45% of employees of civil service, 23% of teachers, 82% of industrial scientists, 70% of University and Academic teachers and professors, 80% of Artists of all fields (theater actors, comedians, artists, writers, …) and 70% of people working and leading in the branches of film, TV, Radio, and other media. The number of workers and leaders was declined and filled extensively with West Germans.
Most scaring is, when you compare these figures with how after 1945 as little as 10% of Nazis have been exchanged in the Western sectors (whereas in Soviet Sector 90% were replaced).
Today 95% of all executive positions are held by West Germans, on East German ground as much as >70%, 95% of state positions like teachers, civil service, judges, advocates or professors are West Germans, on East German terrain an average of >75%. There is no East German television station and as little as 2,4% of publishing houses are East German. There are only two East German national newspapers (out of ~20) with much lower circulation (because they are read only by East Germans), and all local newspapers belong to West German Media Houses, such as Thueringer Tagelblatt belonging to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Leipziger Tageblatt belonging to Springer Media House, Mitteldeutsche Zeitung belonging to Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, Nordkurier belonging to Augsburger Allgemeine, …
But the real problem of East Germans is not the lower income or less economic power. The real problem is to live in a culture that has no official voice and is neglected even to be different compared to the west due to different life experience. West Germans deny that East Germans think and act differently, have different needs, different evaluations and a different view to education, social sciences, kindergarten, health system, or politics in general (left party is voted by East Germans at an average of 20%, whereas in the west by only 2-3%, which is not taken into consideration on national level)
In Museums East German artists are seldom exhibited and even when it comes to historical overviews, only West German artists are shown, as if the GDR never existed. Curators and Galleries are to 95% West Germans, and even the great exhibition specifically comparing East and West German art „Der geteilte Himmel“ of the National Museum in Berlin was curated and scientifically accompanied only by West Germans. East Germans are not given the possibility to speak about their own culture and, more crucial, are not able to pass on their culture. Documentary films on GDR are produced by West Germans and cannot be taken seriously by East Germans, but are taken for granted by West Germans, so they do not listen to Eastern Germans, when they are trying to explain how living in the GDR really was. Younger Germans are fed up with discussions and want to believe under all circumstances that there are no differences. They are taught by politicians and school books that everything coming from GDR is the upmost evil and not worth to ask for.
In libraries, especially universitary ones, stand 85% West German literature and new books are bought to 79% from West German authors/scientists and 20% International ones (mostly American and Western European), while only 1% from East German authors. That is because East Germans and Eastern Europeans don’t follow the official course of scientific and literary opinion and mainstream, but have on all topics different views and also language or logical text structure! Eastern and Western German language have been as different as American and British English due to the 40 years of strong separation. Nowadays only West German is accepted, so East German language and culture has almost extincted, just like West German political leaders such as Helmut Schmidt have hoped for.
